"I am posted to the Office of Japan Affairs, within the East Asian and Pacific Bureau of the Department of State," Caldwell explained. "My work is to support the science and technology portfolio of cooperation and collaboration between the United States and Japan, one of the longest-standing and strongest alliances in the U.S. foreign policy and diplomacy framework. Included in my efforts are projects to support international cooperation between the U.S. and Japan in cancer research and medical care, spaceflight and space exploration, emerging technologies, and public diplomacy of engaging STEM subject matter experts with diplomats and policy."

The JSF program was established in 2003 to further build capacity for science, technology, and engineering expertise within the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
