May 9, 2022

Dear Summer 2022 instructors,

Welcome to summer session 2022!  We first want to thank you for efforts that will help more than 20,000 students (approximately half on campus) progress toward degree completion, gain hands-on experiential learning, transition to Purdue, and much more over the summer months. You are truly helping maximize the potential of Purdue students.

This summer is again a time of transition when it comes to policies and procedures related to COVID-19. These are outlined in several documents under the heading “Summer 2022 Descriptions and Expectations” on the Innovative Learning website. The SOP for Classrooms, Instructional Lab, Experiential Course-Summer 2022 document, in particular, curates guidance in masking and testing/vaccinations.

Following are other key points and deadlines as you prepare your summer courses, including updates to your syllabus, helpful reminders, and instructional resources.

Syllabus guidelineshave been revised specific to Summer 2022. Please pay special attention to the highlighted areas in both the Required and Recommended documents on the syllabus website. Some components related to University Policies and Student Services already exist in your course Brightspace contents, so you can point students to them rather than including details in your syllabus.
  1. The Required components for a Purdue syllabus is a Word document that outlines topics to address in your syllabus and offers sample language. Note that a version of this document is also posted to the Brightspace shell, but is not the most recent version, so we highly recommend you use the website version that was update this week.
  2. The Additional Recommended components to a Purdue syllabus is a second Word document that supplements the first. It was also updated to reflect any recent changes in policies and resources.
Please replace the syllabus template in Brightspace with your updated version. Also submit your syllabus to Purdue’s Course Insights syllabus archive, which can be found under the Faculty tab of MyPurdue.

Regarding assessment
, Purdue’s policy (University Senate Document 84-12, March 25, 1985) does not require a final examination. If you have covered the learning objectives of your course, delivering a final exam is not required. The Innovative Learning Team recommends considering alternate forms of assessment relative to high-stakes exams. See the documents Exams and Academic Integrity Considerations Summer 2022 and Protect Purdue Guidance for Summer 2022 In-Person Exams for further details.

The Faculty tab at MyPurdueoffers important information on your courses and your students, including your course roster and “preferred name” list. Log in using your Purdue two-factor authentication and be sure that your FERPA certification is updated.

Instructional training and workshops are available to summer instructors. To see a full calendar and register, visit the Training@Purdue website.
  1. Purdue Online is offering a new series of workshops and mini-courses for PWL instructors who are teaching online. These workshops and mini-courses are open to any instructor and offer an opportunity to learn about individual topics and earn a digital badge for completing each session.
  2. Innovative Learning offers regular Brightspace and instructional technology drop-In help sessions. In addition, a virtual session Thursday, May 12, 10-10:50 a.m. will focus on Starting Your Brightspace Course Off on the Right Foot.
You may also email InnovativeLearningTeam@purdue.edu to request a free consultation with an instructional developer.

Instructional Data Processing (IDP) supports the educational process at Purdue University by providing fast, reliable, accurate test scoring and course evaluation services. See the IDP website for details on services. Note that IDP offices will be closed, and staff will be working remotely, from Friday, May 16, to Friday, June 10, due to construction in Stewart Center. Offices will reopen Tuesday June 14, with regular summer office hours 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Accessibility to approved accommodations
is a critical commitment that all members of the Purdue community make to our students. Instructors are reminded to work with students to ensure that appropriate accommodations are in place for condensed summer courses. The Disability Resource Center (DRC) remains open to consulting with faculty to help think through student access. See the Required syllabus guidelines for additional details.

Key dates
and deadlines
occur throughout the summer session. Please refer to the Academic Calendar for more information on module dates and grade submission deadlines.

Answering Nature’s call to be outside
is a wellness strategy we encourage. An article in the American Psychological Association’s Monitor on Psychology notes that even short periods outside can offer benefits. According to the website article “Nurtured by Nature,” time spent outside is associated with “cognitive benefits and improvements in mood, mental health, and emotional well-being.”
