Oct. 10, 2022

Dear Fall 2022 instructors,

As we return from fall break, please keep in mind the strategies and resources for your students and yourself that we shared in our email on Wed., Oct. 5.

As some of those resources point out, university students can be particularly vulnerable during an unexpected loss as they are often living away from their personal support systems. Many of our students have already demonstrated amazing strategies for grieving through leaving flowers and notes and attending Wednesday night’s vigil at the Unfinished Block P statue. But a tragedy of this type is not something that many will just “get over” and grief expressions and approaches to coping are unique for each person.

As we move forward with teaching and learning this semester, below are a few helpful reminders, and instructional resources.

Innovation Hub Interdisciplinary Teaching & Learning Expo

Are you interested in creating student experiences that cross disciplinary boundaries? Do you want to meet like-minded faculty and staff from across campus? Perhaps you already have a team, but need support to realize your vision? Then you should join us for the Innovation Hub Transdisciplinary Teaching and Learning Expo on Thurs., Oct. 20.
We’ll have a working lunch and facilitate conversations around undergraduate- or graduate-focused transdisciplinary courses, certificates, degree programs, and more. We’ll also introduce the Innovation Hub Transdisciplinary Education Planning Grant program, which will award faculty and staff teams seed funding as they develop their student experience. Fill out this form by Thurs., Oct. 13, to let us know if you’ll be there on the 20th or if you want to be included in future events. More details are available on the Innovation Hub website.

Experiential Education Grant Program

The Office of Experiential Education plans to allocate funds to support existing or new experiential education programs that serve Purdue West Lafayette undergraduate or PharmD students. Two types of grants are available. ExEd Program Development Mini Grants will range from $3,000 to $5,000. We anticipate funding two of these awards in the present funding cycle.

ExEd Program Development Major Grants will range from $25,000 to $40,000 and will require matching funds. We anticipate funding one of these awards in the present funding cycle.

Proposal deadline is Fri., Oct. 14. More information is available on the ExEd Funding website.

Native American Heritage month

Our Native American Education and Cultural Center (NAECC) is celebrating 15 years of Indigenous excellence this semester. This week’s events recognize NAECC’s Indigenous People’s Day. Your students, and you, are welcome to attend NAECC events.

Instructional resources, workshops

-The next Teaching and Learning Community of Practice (TLCoP) session will take place on Mon., Oct. 24, 3-4 p.m., and will address writing feedback and assessment, including practical approaches.

Instructional training and workshops, as well as daily drop-in help sessions are available to Fall instructors. To see a full calendar and register, visit the Training@Purdue website.
- Staff from Purdue's Teaching and Learning Technology department are also available to host custom workshops for campus units, departments, and colleges. Topics available for custom sessions include Brightspace, Accessibility, Gradescope, and more. Please complete this form to request a custom session. You may also email InnovativeLearningTeam@purdue.edu to request a free consultation with an instructional developer.

Student Success and disability accommodations

Accessibility to approved accommodations is a critical commitment that all members of the Purdue community make to our students. Instructors are reminded to work with students to ensure that appropriate accommodations are in place for fall courses. If you have students with testing accommodations, please ensure you have submitted a Testing Instruction Form (TIF) through the Instructor Accommodation Portal.

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) remains open to consulting with faculty to help think through student access. As part of this effort, the DRC recently launched a Usable Materials Center (UMC) to remove barriers for instructors aiming to improve the usability and accessibility of their course materials. Services include no-cost material conversion and video captioning services. The UMC is also ramping up to soon provide instructors with accessibility checks, workshops, and more. Read more about the UMC

In addition to launching the Usable Materials Center, the DRC has also published several resources to help staff and instructors create accessible materials, events, and courses:
