Nov. 1, 2022

Dear Fall 2022 instructors,

The calendar and the weather remind us that we are deep into the second half of fall semester. With fewer than 20 days of classes, November will go by quickly. Below are a few helpful reminders and instructional resources.

First-Gen celebration week Nov. 7-11
You likely have more than one first-generation student in your classes, but you may not know it. Research reveals that instructors are vital contributors to the success of those who are pursuing a higher education degree, and in whose family neither parent/legal guardian has received a bachelor’s degree. PWL is preparing to celebrate First-Gen Week Nov. 7-11.
  • First-Gen Celebration Week website has information about events across campus, including a university-wide reception on Mon., Nov. 7. All are welcome, but we’d especially love to see some of our many first-generation instructors in attendance.
  • Landscape Analysis that was published this spring. In addition to student data and other research, the PDF shares what students said being first-generation means to them.
Final exams, Student Success & disability accommodations
Please review the Provost email, “Academic Regulations Governing "End-of-Semester" Examinations,” that was sent Oct. 13. Of note this month is planning for students who may need accommodations.

Accessibility to approved accommodations is a critical commitment that all members of the Purdue community make to our students. Instructors are reminded to work with students to ensure that appropriate accommodations are in place for fall courses.

Please make note of the following deadlines for requesting DRC support in administering accommodated final exams (if these deadlines are met, DRC Testing will make every effort to administer the exam on the instructor’s behalf):
  • Fri., Nov. 11, is the deadline for instructors to update their Test Information Form (TIF) for finals week, which effectively gives permission for students to request a seat with DRC Testing. If you have students with testing accommodations, please ensure you have submitted a Testing Instruction Form (TIF) and uploaded your final exam through the Instructor Accommodation Portal.
  • Fri., Nov. 18 (11:55 p.m.) is the deadline by which students must request a seat with DRC Testing. The DRC does everything in its power to encourage students to communicate with their instructors and do their part in meeting this and other deadlines.
  • 48 hours before exam time. DRC Testing must have the exam in its possession to ensure the student can access it at the scheduled time.
Please note that it is sometimes not possible for DRC Testing to administer the accommodated exams at the exact same time the exam is administered for the full class. Flexibility with the date and time for accommodated final exams increases the likelihood that DRC Testing will be able to support instructors’ requests.

Upcoming Innovation Hub grant program deadlines
The Innovation Hub announces two grant programs with upcoming deadlines. For both programs, proposers are encouraged to send a one-page summary to innovation-hub@purdue.edu well before the due date, and Innovation Hub leadership will provide candid feedback about project ideas and alignment with Innovation Hub priorities and goals.
  • Teams of West Lafayette faculty and staff can submit proposals to the Innovation Hub’s Transdisciplinary Program Planning Grant Competition, which will award up to $20,000 to support planning for transdisciplinary experiences for students. The experiences themselves must be delivered before Fall 2024. Proposals are due Dec. 2. Download a proposal template from the program page.
  • Innovation Hub offers its second round of pilot-scale Innovation Grants, which will award up to $40,000 to teams pursuing academic innovation projects that align with Innovation Hub goals. Proposals are due Jan. 20, 2023, and you can download a proposal template or see a program FAQ on the program page.
Instructional resources, workshops
-Proposals are due Mon., Nov. 11, for the Brightspace Innovation grant program. The program seeks innovative research proposals from instructors and staff that leverage Brightspace to promote high-quality instruction, improve outcomes for instructors/students, or foster other new and emerging approaches to teaching.

-The Experiential Education Community of Practice meets Mon., Nov. 14, 1:30-2:30 p.m., in KRCH 230 to discuss critical reflection in ExEd. Reflection on an experience is where much of the learning takes place. Join this interactive workshop to learn strategies to encourage your students to think deeply about their experiences. Complete the CoP RSVP form to attend

-The next Teaching and Learning Community of Practice (TLCoP) session will take place 3-4 p.m., Mon., Nov. 21, on documenting and describing our teaching efforts around writing. Professor and Teaching Academy member, Lindsey Payne, will discuss Purdue’s newly adopted Framework for Teaching Excellence.

-Purdue University Online is taking applications for the Spring 2023 CoPILOT: Cohort Program for Innovation and Leadership in Online Teaching. PWL instructors of record for online courses may submit an electronic application to join the semester-long online instructor development program. Applications are accepted through Mon., Nov. 28. Please notify your college admin lead if you are interested in applying. Further details are available on the CoPILOT application process webpage.

-Instructional training and workshops, as well as daily drop-in help sessions are available to Fall instructors. To see a full calendar and register, visit the Training@Purdue website.

Instructor & student wellness: sleep to learn
According to the neuroscientist Matthew Walker, the title of his book Why We Sleep asks the wrong question. He argues that there is not a single domain of human functioning that does not benefit from sleep – seeming to suggest that a more appropriate question is why we spend any time awake. During this 14-minute talk, the University of California Berkeley professor discusses the importance of sleep before and after learning, and to all aspects of our health.
