Dec. 1, 2022

Dear Fall 2022 instructors,

We hope you had a relaxing Thanksgiving break.

As we approach the last few weeks of the fall 2022 semester, please keep in mind the Provost’s Academic Regulations Governing “End-of-Semester” Examinations memo sent Oct. 13, 2022, particularly the section on next week’s Quiet Period, Dec. 5-10. University Courses that will conduct or collect an assessment during the final exam period shall refrain from assigning or collecting assessments during the Quiet Period.

Below are a few helpful reminders and instructional resources as we finish out the semester and prepare for winter session and spring 2023.

Final exams, Student Success & disability accommodations
Accessibility to approved accommodations is a critical commitment that all members of the Purdue community make to our students. Instructors are reminded to work with students to ensure that appropriate accommodations are in place for fall courses. If your students and you met the deadlines for requesting Disability Resource Center support in administering final exams, please be sure to provide your exam to DRC Testing at least 48 hours before exam time to ensure the student can access it at the scheduled time.

Innovation Hub grant program deadline Dec. 2
Fri., Dec. 2, is the deadline for the Innovation Hub’s Transdisciplinary Program Planning Grant Competition, which will award up to $20,000 to support planning for transdisciplinary experiences for students. The experiences themselves must be delivered before Fall 2024. Teams of West Lafayette faculty and staff can submit proposals by completing the template from the program page.

Innovation Hub is also offering its second round of pilot-scale Innovation Grants, which will award up to $40,000 to teams pursuing academic innovation projects that align with Innovation Hub goals. Proposals are due Jan. 20, 2023, and you can download a proposal template or see a program FAQ on the program page. Proposers are encouraged to send a one-page summary to innovation-hub@purdue.edu well before the due date, and Innovation Hub leadership will provide candid feedback about project ideas and alignment with its priorities and goals.

Libraries supports affordable digital course materials
Purdue Libraries are dedicated to helping reduce the cost of course materials for students. Since early 2020, Libraries has prioritized the purchase of ebooks that have unlimited access as they allow students to use the title wherever and whenever they need it.

Starting fall 2022, Libraries has been licensing ebooks that are listed as required texts for courses and are willing to license other supplemental or additional reading materials that will be used in courses. If your title is not officially listed as a text for the course, then you can email reserves@purdue.edu to see if it is available for libraries to obtain. Keep in mind that not all publishers are willing to license online access to libraries so this option may not be available for every title.

Instructors can also create a library reading list which allows you to link multiple course resources to Brightspace, and you can place requests for course materials by using that tool.

Instructional resources, workshops
-Recordings of fall 2022 Teaching and Learning Community of Practice (TLCoP) sessions are available on TLCoP’s webpage. Please consider completing the TLCoP survey to provide feedback on the semester and ideas for spring 2022.

-Instructors teaching in Brightspace who want help finalizing grades and posting them to Banner are invited to participate in the Finalizing your Brightspace gradebook workshop on Tues, Dec. 6, 11 a.m.-12 noon. Daily drop-in help sessions are also offered during Quiet Period and two drop-ins are offered each day of finals week, as well as the Monday and Tuesday after. Check out the details and register by visiting the Training@Purdue website.

Instructor & student wellness tip
We can curate our media use – and help students do the same  to improve wellness. That doesn’t have to mean disconnecting from our favorite social media or news channel -- that’s a big “nope” from students -- but instead making choices about what we consume. According to the latest Steps to Leaps Well Being Tips, creating a portfolio of thoughtful, realistic media choices can be a way to bring balance to our perspectives. We often guide students to credible, reliable resources in their fields of study. This practice can be expanded to include those sources’ websites, listservs, and social media accounts. For other, specific tips, read the Nov. 28, 2022 post, and check out the archive of past wellness topics.
