The School of Industrial Engineering is pleased to announce that Associate Professor Denny Yu has been awarded as 2023-24 Fulbright Scholar. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award will provide Yu and collaborators at the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) the opportunity to pursue research in the field of real-time human-aware systems for enhancing user performance.  The Purdue/MCI team will share expertise over the course of this project.  Yu's team at Purdue has developed multimodal sensors and algorithms for predicting user cognitive load, while researchers at MCI have a strong background in novel machine learning and signal processing techniques for high performance training, which has helped contribute to Austria's Olympic team winning multiple medals.

The project aims to "discover sensor features robust to cross-cultural differences on cognitive load with systematic experiments modulating user cognitive load" and to "develop partnerships and formative assessment of cognition-based interventions for real-time enhancement of user performance." In addition to this, as part of the educational plan, Yu will co-instruct undergraduate and graduate courses on human factors engineering and medical technologies at MCI.

The grant period will run from February of 2024 to July of 2024.

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. Government's flagship international educational exchange program, supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world. The Fulbright Program is funded through annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

For over 75 years, the Fulbright Program has provided participants, who are chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential, with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to the challenges facing our communities and our world.
